METEORA

General information
Nestled in the heart of Greece, amidst the rugged landscape of Thessaly, lies the enchanting region of Meteora. Renowned for its surreal rock formations and its unique monasteries, Meteora is a destination that captures the imagination. The magnificent rock formation is a Unesco World Heritage site since 1988.

Let us show you all this anparalleled beauty through the eyes of a local guide. You will have the opportunity to visit the monasteries and have a guided tour that will unravel the world of byzantine art and architecture. We will be trasported back in time and experience this one-of-a-kind creation.

Meteora is also a heaven for nature lovers and adventurers. The breathtaking view on top of the rocks and the distant peaks of Pindus Mountain Range will leave you in awe.

In Meteora there are six fully functioning monasteries. Allow us to share some basic information about each one.

  • The Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron is the biggest monastery in the area. It is the first that was built in the 14 th century by Saint Athanasios the Meteorite, who gave to the area the name “Meteora”. He is considered the organiser of systematic monasticism in the area. The church (katholikon) is dedicated to the Transfiguation of Jesus Christ the Savior.
  • The Holy Monastery of Varlaam is the second biggest in the area. The name comes from the monk Varlaam, who managed to climb on top of the rock and build a small church in the 14 th century. After his death, the monastery was abandoned. In the 16 th century, two brothers and monks, Theophanis and Nektarios, rebuilt the monastery. The church (katholikon) is dedicated to All Saints.
  • The Holy Monastery of Agios Stefanos (St. Stephen) is the most easily accesible. It is one of the two female monasteries (nunnery) in the area. During World War II the monastery was hit and had to be rebuilt. The church (katholikon) is dedicated to Saint Charalambos.  All the wall paintings are created from 1990 up to today!
  • The Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas Anapafsas is the first that we encounter as we reach Meteora from the village of Kastraki. The first church was built in the 14 th century but was completely renovated in the 16 th century. It was used as a resting place for the pilgrims. The word “Anapafsas” comes from the greek word “ανάπαυση” (anapafsi), which means to rest.
  • The Holy Monastery of Holy Trinity is one of the most impressive, as it stands on top of sn imposing boulder, cut from the road. The church dates back to the 15 th century. Although climbing 140 steep steps can be quite challenging, the breathtaking view of the rocks and Kalabaka is rewarding!
  • The Holy Monastery of Roussanou (Saint Barbara) is one of the two female monasteries in the area. The monastery was built in the 16 th century. The circular balcony with a 360º view just outside of the monastery will provide you with memories that you will never forget!
